Missions

The Following Missions are presently being supported in some way by this congregation or have been supported in the past. Jared Looney began attending the 8th & Harrison Church as a 13 year old and was baptized here in Harlingen as a teenager, having grown up actively involved in our youth group.

Please keep all these missions and missionaries in your prayers.

Dr. Jared Looney graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in missions. He worked in Houston’s inner-city neighborhoods at Impact Ministries until 1999. While in Houston, he completed a Master of Arts in theological studies at Houston Graduate School of Theology. After a cultural immersion in Costa Rica, Jared relocated back to Abilene where he served as a missionary-in-residence with Mission Church and did further preparation for church planting in New York City.

In 2001, Jared moved to the Bronx and in 2002 married Hylma Blagrove. A church was begun at the beginning of 2003 in a living room in the Pelham Parkway neighborhood. After months of wrestling and discernment, his team moved the ministry approach towards developing an organic church planting network.

Partnering with co-laborers for mission, training missional workers, and mentoring emerging leaders, Jared continues to address the challenges of mission in an urban global world. In 2010 he completed a Doctor of Missiology from the Fuller School of Intercultural Studies. With the help of Christian friends and partners, Jared and Hylma are serving the mission of God in New York City with their daughter, Adalia.

Joel and Maricor Talaver report from the Philippines that the 40th Anniversary of the Cebu City congregation was a great experience.  You will recall that the congregation was established by “our own” missionaries, Dominador and Telly Belo, when they moved there back in 1971. There were no known churches of Christ in the Cebu area when the Belos moved there.  They worked there for twelve years, solidly establishing several congregations, before moving to their present location in Tacloban, Leyte.

The Talavers are also on Facebook.
